Baidyanath Dham Deoghar — One of India's 12 Jyotirlingas, Jharkhand's Most Sacred Pilgrimage
One of India's 12 Jyotirlingas — The Divine Heart of Jharkhand
Baidyanath Dham (also spelled Baidyanath Temple or Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga) is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of India, located in Deoghar, Jharkhand. The temple complex contains 22 temples, with the main Baidyanath Temple standing 72 feet tall and housing one of Hinduism's most sacred Shiva lingas — believed in Hindu tradition to be the only Kamanalingam (wish-fulfilling lingam). According to official Deoghar tourism records, the temple attracts over one million devotees during the annual Shravan Mela pilgrimage held in July and August each year.
Deoghar — literally meaning 'Abode of Gods' — is the spiritual capital of Jharkhand and one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in eastern India. The Baidyanath Temple complex is the focal point of an entire pilgrimage culture: every year during the month of Shravan (July–August), over a million devotees dressed in saffron undertake the Kanwar Yatra — a 105 km barefoot pilgrimage from Ajgaibinath in Sultanganj (Bihar), carrying Ganga water to offer to the deity. This is among the largest religious processions in the world by participant count. Beyond the main Baidyanath Temple, the complex includes temples for Shakti goddesses including Maa Kamakhya, Maa Mansa, Maa Sandhya, and Maa Bagla. Deoghar Airport, inaugurated in 2022, now connects the city to major Indian airports.
