About Netarhat

Netarhat is a hill station in Latehar district, Jharkhand, located at an elevation of 1,128 metres (3,701 feet) on the Chotanagpur Plateau. Known as the 'Queen of Chotanagpur,' it is the most visited nature destination in western Jharkhand, famous for its sunrise point, Magnolia Sunset Point, Ghaghri waterfalls, and pine forests. According to the Jharkhand Tourism Department, Netarhat receives approximately 44,000 tourists annually at the Netarhat Residential School campus alone, with total annual footfall significantly higher across all attractions.

Netarhat sits at the highest point of the Chotanagpur Plateau, surrounded by dense forests of sal, pine, mahua, and eucalyptus. The British identified it as a summer retreat in the early 20th century, and the colonial-era Chalet House — built under Sir Edward Gate, Lieutenant Governor of Bihar and Orissa — still stands 2 km from the town centre. The Sunrise Point at Netarhat, located 0.5 km from the main bus stand, is the single most photographed natural feature in Jharkhand. The Magnolia Sunset Point, 10 km from town on the Betla road, offers a 270-degree panorama of forested valleys as the sun descends behind the Vindhya ranges. The twin Ghaghri waterfalls are the most accessible natural attractions from Netarhat: Upper Ghaghri (4 km from town) is a gentle forest cascade suitable for families, while Lower Ghaghri (10 km from town) drops nearly 100 metres through a dense sal gorge. The Koel River Valley viewpoint (3 km from town) offers sweeping aerial views of the North Koel River winding through forested hills far below. Netarhat is also the base for day trips to Lodh Falls (60 km), Jharkhand's highest waterfall at 143 metres, and Betla National Park (115 km), the state's only tiger reserve.

Common questions about visiting Netarhat, Jharkhand

Netarhat is famous for its sunrise and sunset viewpoints, dense pine and sal forests, and cool mountain climate. The Sunrise Point, Magnolia Sunset Point, Upper and Lower Ghaghri waterfalls, and the British-era Chalet House are its main attractions. It is also the nearest base for visiting Lodh Falls (Jharkhand's highest waterfall) and Betla National Park (Jharkhand's only tiger reserve).

The best time to visit Netarhat is October to March, when the weather is cool and clear. Sunrise and sunset views are clearest between November and February. Monsoon months (July to September) bring heavy rain and fog that limit visibility from viewpoints, though the forests are lush and waterfalls are at peak flow.

Netarhat is 156 km from Ranchi by road, approximately 4 to 5 hours by car. The drive passes through Lohardaga town (96 km from Ranchi) and then ascends through seven hill passes (ghats) on the Chotanagpur Plateau before reaching Netarhat.

Sunrise at Netarhat occurs between 5:45 AM and 6:15 AM depending on the season. October to February offers the clearest views. Visitors should arrive at the Sunrise Point near Hotel Prabhat Vihar by 5:30 AM to secure a viewing position before crowds arrive.

Netarhat is located at 1,128 metres (3,701 feet) above sea level, making it the highest point on the Chotanagpur Plateau in Jharkhand. The elevated altitude keeps temperatures cooler than the plains — typically 8°C to 25°C in winter months (November to February).

Places to visit near Netarhat include: Upper Ghaghri Falls (4 km), Lower Ghaghri Falls (10 km), Magnolia Sunset Point (10 km), Koel River Valley viewpoint (3 km), Chalet House colonial museum (2 km), Netarhat Dam (2 km), Lodh Falls — Jharkhand's highest waterfall (60 km), Mahuadanr Wolf Sanctuary (70 km), and Betla National Park (115 km).
