Dharagiri Falls Ghatshila — Hidden Waterfall Near Ghatshila Town, East Singhbhum
A Forest Waterfall Hidden Near Ghatshila — Tall, Serene, and Uncrowded
Dharagiri Falls is a forest waterfall near Ghatshila town in East Singhbhum district, approximately 160 km from Ranchi. Reached via a 15–20 minute forest trail from the road, the falls drop through a narrow gorge in relative obscurity — few tourists from outside the region seek it out, though it is known to Ghatshila residents as one of the most attractive natural sites in the district. The Subarnarekha River, which Ghatshila is famous for, flows in the broader valley 5 km from the falls.
Dharagiri Falls drops through a narrow gorge where the rock walls on both sides have been smoothed by centuries of water action into elegant curved faces. The height of the falls is moderate — approximately 20–25 metres — but the narrowness of the gorge concentrates the water into a single powerful stream rather than spreading it, creating an audible roar even from 200 metres away. The surrounding forest is dense and undisturbed, with no development visible from the falls base. Ghatshila is itself a literary town — the novelist Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay (author of Pather Panchali) spent his later years here, and the town has maintained a small cultural following because of that association. A visit to Dharagiri Falls from Ghatshila combines the town's literary heritage with a genuine forest waterfall experience. The trail to the falls begins from a village outside Ghatshila and passes through secondary forest before entering the primary woodland around the gorge. In the high monsoon months (August–September), Dharagiri Falls is at maximum volume but the trail becomes very slippery. October through December offers the best combination of strong flow and walkable conditions. By January and February the flow reduces significantly, but the gorge remains visually impressive even with minimal water.
