Khandoli Dam Giridih — Reservoir Garden, Boating & Hill Views, Jharkhand
Jharkhand's Most Visited Reservoir Garden — Hills, Boating, and Forest Picnic Grounds
Khandoli Dam near Giridih town is a small reservoir set in a dramatic landscape of rocky granite hills, developed by the Jharkhand Tourism Development Corporation as one of the state's most picturesque picnic destinations. The dam sits at the foot of a significant granite hill mass, with a garden, boating facility, and a ropeway connecting the dam base to a viewpoint on the hill above.
Khandoli's unusual character comes from the juxtaposition of the calm reservoir water against the abrupt granite hills that rise directly from the water's edge on the southern bank. The effect — flat water below, vertical rock above — is immediately striking and quite unlike the forested reservoir settings found elsewhere in Jharkhand. The JTDC-developed facility includes a formal garden on the northern bank, a boating jetty offering pedal boats and rowboats, and a ropeway that ascends the granite hill to a viewpoint at the summit. The summit viewpoint provides a 360-degree panorama over the Khandoli reservoir, the Giridih town grid, and the continuous forest of the Giridih plateau extending toward Parasnath on the horizon. The granite hill itself is part of the same geological formation as Parasnath and is recognisable in the rocky outcrops and smooth boulder fields that characterise the slopes. Short walking trails connect the ropeway base to a small temple on a lower rock terrace that offers a slightly different perspective on the reservoir. Khandoli is the most developed and visited reservoir in the Giridih-Koderma-Dhanbad zone, which means it draws substantial weekend crowds from Dhanbad, Bokaro, and Giridih. Weekday visits in the cool season are significantly quieter. The facility is well-maintained and entry is affordable.
