About Perwaghagh Waterfall

Perwaghagh Waterfall is a forest waterfall in Khunti district, approximately 60 km from Ranchi near the Torpa area, whose name translates to 'home of pigeons' — perwa meaning pigeon and ghagh meaning waterfall in the local Mundari dialect. Local tribal oral tradition holds that the cave behind the waterfall was historically home to a large colony of rock pigeons, and the birds' presence gave the falls its distinctive name. The falls drop through a narrow forest gorge in a setting of dense sal and bamboo.

Perwaghagh Waterfall descends over a curved rock face that creates a natural overhang — the water falls in an arc that leaves a sheltered space between the rock wall and the falling water. This is the feature that the pigeon colony tradition references: the sheltered cave-like space behind the curtain of water was, in earlier times, home to nesting rock pigeons. Whether the pigeons remain in numbers today varies by season, but the physical feature that inspired the name is still clearly visible. The falls are accessed via a forest trail from the Torpa area, requiring a walk of 2–3 km through Munda tribal village territory. The trail passes through paddy cultivation areas and secondary forest before entering the primary sal forest approaching the falls. Local villagers in the Torpa area are familiar with the site and can provide guidance. Perwaghagh is in many ways the tribal-belt waterfall experience that Panchghagh (5 km away) has popularised at a more accessible level. Fewer visitors make the effort to reach Perwaghagh, which means the falls and their setting remain in a more natural, less impacted state. The combination of the two — Panchghagh's spectacle and Perwaghagh's myth — makes for a genuinely full Khunti waterfall day.
