Asia's Largest Township Garden — Bokaro Steel City's 400-Acre Urban Forest Park
City Park in Bokaro Steel City Sector 4 is one of the largest planned township parks in India, covering over 400 acres of landscaped garden, natural forest, and recreational facilities developed by the Steel Authority of India alongside the Bokaro Steel Plant. The park contains rose gardens, a boating lake, amphitheatre, children's rides, and a network of walking paths through a mix of planted gardens and retained natural sal forest.
City Park was developed as an integral part of the Bokaro Steel Township master plan — a deliberate green infrastructure project that gave the steel city an amenity equivalent to what was being built in the industrial townships of Ruhr or Pittsburgh. The scale is genuinely impressive: 400 acres accommodates both intensively maintained garden zones and areas of natural forest that have matured over five decades into significant woodland. The rose garden section is the most photographed — thousands of rose varieties in formal beds that peak between November and February. Adjacent to this is the boating lake, a substantial artificial water body with paddle boats and rowboats operating daily during peak season. The lakeshore paths are among the most pleasant walking circuits in any Jharkhand urban area. The natural forest section toward the park's interior edge is less visited and more interesting for wildlife. The mature sal and mixed forest here holds resident populations of monkeys, mongoose, jackals, and a rich bird community including kingfishers, drongos, and barbets. The contrast between the formal garden entry sections and this naturalistic forest interior is one of the park's distinguishing characteristics. For visitors passing through Bokaro or using it as a base for reservoir and forest visits in the district, City Park provides an accessible, well-maintained open space for an early morning or evening walk — the kind of green infrastructure that few other Jharkhand cities have at anything near this scale.
