About Jawaharlal Nehru Biological Park, Bokaro

Jawaharlal Nehru Biological Park in Bokaro Sector 9 is one of Jharkhand's largest and best-maintained urban zoos, established by the Bokaro Steel Plant in a 200-acre forest estate adjacent to the steel township. The park houses Bengal tigers, lions, leopards, elephants, bears, deer, crocodiles, and a wide range of bird species in naturalistic enclosures, and is recognised as one of the most professionally managed zoological parks in eastern India.

The Biological Park was developed within the forest land attached to SAIL's Bokaro Steel Plant township — an unusual origin that gave the zoo a substantial forested setting rather than the cramped urban footprint typical of older Indian city zoos. The result is a facility where enclosures sit within natural shade canopy and the park circuit walks through wooded paths between exhibits rather than bare concrete corridors. The Bengal tiger enclosure is the centrepiece — multiple animals in a naturalistic landscape with an observation gallery that allows close viewing. Lions, leopards, and sloth bears occupy similarly designed enclosures in the large-carnivore section. The elephant area accommodates both Asian elephants and a small herd of deer sharing the peripheral grass zones. A large waterfowl and aquatic section contains crocodiles, gharials, and numerous wetland bird species in a lake setting. The bird aviaries house peacocks, hornbills, parakeets, and a range of raptors including owls and eagles. A children's toy train circuit connects the sections, making the full 200-acre circuit accessible for families with young children. The park is managed by a dedicated authority and maintains notably higher standards of animal welfare and habitat quality than many comparable institutions in the region. Entry is priced very affordably and the park is best visited on weekdays when the weekend crowd from Bokaro and Dhanbad is absent.
