Ormanjhi Zoo Ranchi — Bhagwan Birsa Biological Park, Jharkhand's Best Wildlife Park
Jharkhand's Premier Zoo — Wildlife Conservation at Ormanjhi, 20 km from Ranchi
Bhagwan Birsa Biological Park, commonly known as Ormanjhi Zoo, is Jharkhand's largest and most well-maintained zoological park, located 20 km from Ranchi in the Ormanjhi area. Spread over approximately 104 hectares of natural sal forest, the park houses a significant collection of Indian wildlife including tigers, leopards, elephants, white tigers, sloth bears, Indian pythons, and over 60 species of birds. It is named in honour of Birsa Munda, Jharkhand's legendary tribal freedom fighter.
Bhagwan Birsa Biological Park was established to create a modern wildlife conservation and education facility for Jharkhand, replacing the older and smaller Ranchi Zoo. The park's design incorporates the natural sal forest landscape of the Ormanjhi hills, meaning that many enclosures blend into the surrounding woodland and animals are viewed against a backdrop of natural vegetation rather than concrete walls. The park's collection includes white tigers — a rare genetic variant of the Bengal tiger — which are among the most visible attractions. The elephant section is spacious, allowing the park's resident elephants (including some that have been rescued from conflict situations) to roam considerable distances. A dedicated reptile house holds Indian pythons, gharials, and various monitor lizard species. The aviary section covers a significant area and houses peacocks, hornbills, and various eagle species. A battery-operated vehicle service runs a circuit of the park for those who prefer not to walk the full distance (the park covers several kilometres of paths). The park is open six days a week (closed Mondays) and entry fees are modest. The Ormanjhi area also includes Rukka Dam and Nakshatra Van within 10 km, making it the centre of a broader day-trip cluster from Ranchi.
