Ranchi

Ranchi is the capital of Jharkhand and the natural base for exploring the state's most diverse cluster of natural and cultural destinations. Within 60 km of the city lie three of the most-visited waterfalls in Jharkhand — Hundru Falls (98-metre plunge), Dassam Falls (ten-channel spread), and Jonha Falls (cascade beside an ancient Buddhist monastery) — each distinct in character, each reachable as a half-day drive from the city. Beyond the waterfalls, Ranchi district spreads across the Chotanagpur plateau in a landscape of granite-edged valleys, dense sal forests, and long reservoir backwaters.

The district's spiritual life centres on the Jagannath Temple — a 17th-century Odishan-style complex that hosts one of eastern India's major Rath Yatra processions — and on Pahari Mandir, whose 468-step ascent to a hilltop Shiva shrine has become a daily ritual for Ranchi residents. Patratu Valley's winding 32 km road through forested hills above a wide reservoir is a landscape drive with few equivalents in the state. The Birsa Munda Zoological Park, Biodiversity Park, and Rock Garden provide half a day of urban destinations before the drives into the surrounding district begin.

Ranchi functions as the state's primary transport hub — it has Jharkhand's only commercial airport (Birsa Munda Airport), the main rail connections northward to Patna and eastward to Kolkata, and the largest concentration of hotels and guesthouses in the state. Every district in Jharkhand is reachable from Ranchi as a day trip or overnight excursion, making it the logical first and last stop for any multi-destination Jharkhand itinerary.
