About Jagannath Temple, Ranchi

Jagannath Temple in Ranchi is a 17th-century hilltop temple dedicated to Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra, built in the architectural style of the world-famous Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha. Located 10 km from Ranchi city centre on Jagannathpur Road, the temple was consecrated in 1691 and stands atop a prominent hill offering panoramic views of the city and surrounding Chotanagpur Plateau. Its annual Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival) is the single largest religious gathering in Jharkhand, drawing hundreds of thousands of devotees.

The Jagannath Temple at Jagannathpur was built in 1691 under the patronage of the Nagvanshi rulers of Chotanagpur, who were devoted adherents of the Jagannath tradition. The temple's architecture closely follows the Pancharatha style of the Puri Jagannath Dham — a curvilinear Rekha Deula tower over the main sanctum, a Jagamohana (assembly hall), and a Nata Mandira (dancing hall). The scale is smaller than Puri but the spiritual atmosphere is considered equally significant by local devotees. The hill on which the temple stands requires a climb of more than 500 stone steps from the base, passing through a forest of mango and peepal trees. The climb takes 15–20 minutes at an easy pace and the views open progressively as you ascend. From the summit, the entirety of Ranchi city is visible to the southeast, with the forested plateau stretching in the opposite direction — a panorama that few viewpoints in Ranchi match. The annual Rath Yatra at Jagannath Temple Ranchi is celebrated simultaneously with the festival in Puri, on Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya (June or July). Three giant wooden chariots are pulled through the streets of Jagannathpur, and the procession route is lined with hundreds of thousands of devotees. The Shravan month (July–August) also sees heavy footfall as pilgrims combine this temple with Pahari Mandir and the broader Ranchi temple circuit.
