Ranchi Lake Bada Talab — Historic City Lake and Evening Promenade in Ranchi
Ranchi's Historic Heart — The Ancient Artificial Lake at the Centre of the City
Ranchi Lake, locally known as Bada Talab (Big Lake), is a historic artificial lake located 2 km from Ranchi's main market area, believed to have been constructed several centuries ago by the Nagvanshi kings of the Chotanagpur region. Covering approximately 74 acres, it is one of the oldest surviving artificial water bodies in Jharkhand and has functioned for centuries as a community resource for the city. The lakefront promenade is today one of Ranchi's most popular evening destinations.
Bada Talab sits at the geographical and cultural heart of old Ranchi, with the Ranchi Hill (Pahari Mandir) visible to the northeast and the older residential neighbourhoods of the city on its western bank. The lake was originally built to serve the agricultural and drinking water needs of the settlement, and local tradition attributes its construction to the Nagvanshi rulers who governed Chotanagpur before Mughal and later British influence. The lake has survived the expansion of Ranchi from a small hill station to a state capital. The lakefront promenade (known as Ranchi Lake Park) is developed with pathways, benches, and street lighting, making it one of the most used public spaces in the city. Evening crowds from October to March are substantial — walkers, families with children, hawkers selling corn and ice cream, and groups sitting by the water. Paddle boats are available for hire, and the illuminated lakefront creates a pleasant atmosphere after dark. The Ranchi Lake is listed among the wetlands of Jharkhand and supports a population of migratory birds during winter, including various duck species and waders. The area around the lake includes the Bhagwan Birsa Munda Smriti Udyan (children's park) and is within walking distance of Ranchi's main commercial district.
