Sita Falls Ranchi — Sacred Waterfall 50 km from Ranchi on the Kanchi River
Where Goddess Sita Left Her Footprints — A Sacred Waterfall Near Ranchi
Sita Falls is a sacred curtain-style waterfall on the Kanchi River, located 50 km from Ranchi near Tamar in Jharkhand. The falls descend in a wide, unbroken sheet through dense sal forest and are accessed via more than 200 stone steps from the road above. Local tradition holds that Goddess Sita stopped here during her forest exile as recounted in the Ramayana, and the natural pool at the base — called Sita Kund — is considered holy by devotees across the Chotanagpur region.
Sita Falls sits at the edge of a forested escarpment where the Kanchi River suddenly drops from the plateau into a gorge thick with sal and mahua trees. The waterfall spreads across a rock face nearly 20 metres wide, falling in a continuous curtain rather than a single stream — an effect that makes it photogenic throughout the season. From the road, 200 stone steps descend through the canopy to the base, where the spray creates a permanently cool microclimate even in late October. The Sita Kund at the base of the falls is the centrepiece of the site's spiritual identity. The pool forms naturally in a rocky depression where the falling water collects, and it remains clean and swimmable between October and February. Local pilgrims bathe here on Ram Navami and during the Shravan month, treating the act as a smaller-scale equivalent of bathing at Rajrappa or Deoghar. The footprint impressions in the rock near the pool are pointed out by local guides as evidence of Sita's passage — whether geological or mythological, they add to the site's meditative atmosphere. Sita Falls is best combined with Dassam Falls (15 km away) and Jonha Falls (20 km away) into a single day circuit from Ranchi. The road from Ranchi via NH-33 to Tamar is well-maintained and takes about 75 minutes. The falls are at peak volume from August through November; by January the flow thins to a steady veil that is still beautiful but less dramatic. Summer visits (March–May) are not recommended as the falls reduce to a trickle.
