The concept behind Nakshatra Van is drawn from ancient Indian astronomical and Ayurvedic texts, which assign a specific tree or plant to each of the 27 Nakshatras (star clusters that the moon passes through on its 27-day cycle). Each Nakshatra-tree association carries medicinal, ritual, and ecological significance in the traditional Indian knowledge system. Nakshatra Van at Ranchi brings this textual tradition into a living garden, planting specimens of all 27 Nakshatra trees in a single accessible space. Visitors can look up their birth Nakshatra (calculable from their birth date and time using any Hindu calendar) and identify their corresponding tree in the garden. The garden provides interpretive signboards for each Nakshatra section explaining the astronomical association, the tree's Sanskrit name, local tribal name, and medicinal properties.
