Biodiversity Park Ranchi — Nature Conservation Park Celebrating Jharkhand's Flora
Ranchi's Green Lung — A Conservation Park Celebrating Jharkhand's Native Flora
Biodiversity Park in Ranchi is a nature conservation park established to preserve and display the native flora of Jharkhand, particularly the medicinal plants, tribal food plants, and native tree species that define the ecological heritage of the Chotanagpur Plateau. Located 5 km from the city centre, the park serves as both a green space for Ranchi residents and an outdoor educational resource for the state's unique biodiversity.
Biodiversity Park was developed on a plot of plateau land where native vegetation was protected and augmented with systematically planted collections of Jharkhand's ecologically significant plant species. The park is organised into thematic sections: a medicinal plant garden featuring herbs used in traditional Adivasi healing, a section dedicated to the sal forest understory plants, a bamboo grove, and an open meadow area. Interpretive signboards throughout identify species and explain their ecological and cultural roles. The park's medicinal plant section is its most distinctive feature. Many of the plants here — including species of Terminalia, Emblica, Aegle, and Tinospora — are integral to Jharkhand's traditional healthcare systems and the tribal communities that have managed them for generations. The park has collaborated with local Adivasi knowledge holders to document these plants and their uses, making it one of the few parks in the state that actively incorporates indigenous ecological knowledge. Biodiversity Park is popular with school groups, botany students, and morning walkers from the surrounding neighbourhoods. The park's relatively compact size (a complete circuit takes about an hour on foot) makes it suitable as part of a broader Ranchi city nature day that includes Pahari Mandir, Ranchi Lake, and Rock Garden.
