Getalsud Dam Ranchi — Largest Reservoir Near Ranchi on the Subarnarekha River
The Largest Reservoir Near Ranchi — Boating on the Subarnarekha at Getalsud
Getalsud Dam is a large hydroelectric and irrigation dam on the Subarnarekha River, located 40 km from Ranchi in the Ratu block of Ranchi district. The dam's reservoir stretches several kilometres upstream through forested hill country, creating one of the most expansive bodies of open water near the state capital. Boating facilities are available at the dam site, and the drive from Ranchi along the Ratu Road passes through attractive plateau countryside.
Getalsud Dam was constructed on the Subarnarekha River as part of a multi-purpose water management project for Ranchi district. The reservoir behind the dam extends far into the forested interior, and viewed from the dam wall, the water appears to reach the horizon with forested ridges on both banks. The scale distinguishes it from the smaller reservoirs closer to Ranchi — Getalsud feels more like a genuine lake than an urban water supply tank. Boating on the Getalsud reservoir is available through the Jharkhand Tourism Development Corporation facility at the dam site. Both motorised and non-motorised boats operate, and the experience of being on open water surrounded by forested hills with no urban infrastructure in sight is one of the more peaceful day-trip options available within 40 km of Ranchi. Fishing is also practiced along the reservoir banks. The drive from Ranchi on the Ratu Road (towards Ratu Palace) is itself attractive, passing through plateau farmland and small tribal settlements. Getalsud can be combined with a visit to Ratu Palace (the historic palace of the Nagvanshi dynasty, 35 km from Ranchi) to make a historically and naturally complete day outing.
