Home to Wild Elephants in the Hills Above Jamshedpur
Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary is a 193 sq km wildlife sanctuary in East Singhbhum district, Jharkhand, located 10 km from Jamshedpur city. It is the most accessible wildlife reserve in Jharkhand and is particularly known for its large population of wild Asian elephants — the Dalma Hills form part of a critical elephant corridor in eastern India. According to the Jharkhand Forest Department, herd sizes of 20 to 50 elephants are commonly seen near the forest water sources.
The Dalma Hills rise to 915 metres above the Jamshedpur plains, offering panoramic views of the city and the Subarnarekha River valley from the summit. The sanctuary's mixed deciduous forest supports leopards, sloth bears, sambars, and over 150 bird species in addition to elephants. The Dalma Hills Shiva Temple near the summit adds a spiritual dimension to what is primarily a wildlife and trekking destination. Dimna Lake — an artificial reservoir at the foot of the Dalma Hills — is a popular boating and photography spot directly adjacent to the sanctuary.
