About Dimna Lake

Dimna Lake is a scenic artificial reservoir on the outskirts of Jamshedpur, East Singhbhum district, created by damming a stream at the foot of the Dalma Hills. The lake serves as a water supply source for Jamshedpur and has become one of the city's most visited natural leisure spots, offering boating facilities against a backdrop of the forested Dalma Hills — the same hills that form the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary above. The lake is 135 km from Ranchi.

Dimna Lake sits in a natural valley between the Jamshedpur industrial township and the forested Dalma Hills rising above. The reservoir is broad and calm, reflecting the steep forested hillside of Dalma on one bank and the Jamshedpur skyline on the other — a juxtaposition that is simultaneously industrial and natural and somehow works as a landscape. The water quality is maintained as it feeds Jamshedpur's water supply, and the cleanliness of the reservoir is apparent. Boating is the primary visitor activity — motorised and non-motorised boats operate from the main ghat, and the experience of being on open water with the Dalma forest rising directly above is distinctive. From the water, the forest-covered hillside of Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary (home to elephants, leopards, and deer) is visible but appears as benign natural scenery rather than the active wildlife habitat it is. Elephant herds do occasionally descend from Dalma to the lake area, particularly in the dry season. Dimna Lake is 10 km from central Jamshedpur and typically combined with a Jubilee Park visit for a complete Jamshedpur day trip. The lakeside road offers pleasant evening drives, and a sunset from the Dimna embankment with the Dalma Hills silhouetted against the western sky is one of Jamshedpur's most photogenic natural experiences.
