About Kathikund Waterfall, Dumka

Kathikund in Dumka district sits at the plateau edge where the Santhal Parganas upland drops sharply toward the Bengal plains, and the streams that drain this escarpment produce seasonal waterfalls through the forest. The area is known for its post-monsoon waterfalls and the dense Santhal Parganas forest that covers the escarpment slopes, making it one of the most pristine waterfall destinations in the eastern Jharkhand plateau.

The Santhal Parganas plateau edge around Kathikund is geologically dramatic — the Chotanagpur Plateau drops several hundred metres over a relatively short distance toward the Bengal plains, and the streams draining this escarpment generate waterfalls that are seasonal but powerful in the post-monsoon period from October through January. The forest on the escarpment slopes is among the least disturbed in eastern Jharkhand, partly because the terrain is too steep for agricultural conversion. Sal gives way to mixed semi-evergreen forest on the wetter slopes, and the forest floor retains the moisture that keeps it green well into the dry season. The stream corridors through this forest are bird-rich — kingfishers, drongos, and forest eagles are regularly observed. Kathikund village sits above the waterfall escarpment and the descent to the falls is on forest paths maintained by local community members. The Santhali community in the surrounding villages maintains a traditional relationship with the forest and the waterfall — the latter associated with specific festival observances in the Santhal calendar. The remoteness of Kathikund is its primary character: it requires a significant drive from Dumka town and then a forest walk, but visitors who make the effort find a waterfall experience without the weekend crowds that mark the more accessible sites in western Jharkhand.

Common questions about visiting Kathikund Waterfall, Dumka, Jharkhand

Kathikund Waterfall is in Kathikund block of Dumka district, at the escarpment edge of the Santhal Parganas plateau where streams fall toward the Bengal plains. It is 45 km east of Dumka town — approximately 1.5 hours by road.

October to January for the best waterfall. The falls are strongest in October–December after the monsoon. By February the flow reduces significantly. Avoid visiting solely for the waterfall after January.

A local guide from Kathikund village is strongly recommended. The forest path to the falls is unmarked and the terrain around the escarpment edge requires local knowledge for safe navigation.
