Kechki Sangam Latehar — River Confluence Inside Palamau Tiger Reserve, Jharkhand
Sacred River Confluence Inside Palamau Tiger Reserve — Wildlife and Wild Water
Kechki Sangam is the confluence of the Auranga and North Koel rivers inside the Palamau Tiger Reserve, Latehar district, approximately 170 km from Ranchi. This river meeting point creates a wide sandy floodplain inside the reserve that functions as a critical wildlife watering zone — elephants, gaur, spotted deer, and sambar come to the sangam regularly, particularly in the dry season when it represents one of the few reliable water sources in the reserve interior.
The Kechki Sangam is not a conventional tourist attraction — it is a wildlife observation point accessible only via forest jeep through the Palamau Tiger Reserve. The confluence itself is a broad, sandy river meeting where the Auranga and North Koel join, creating a wide, shallow zone that is navigable on foot during the dry season (December–March). The scale of the riverbed — several hundred metres wide at the confluence — creates an open sightline that is unusual in dense forest environments and makes wildlife spotting significantly easier than in closed-canopy terrain. Elephants are the most regularly encountered animals at Kechki Sangam, drawn by the water and the open sand for dust-bathing. Large herds of spotted deer and sambar graze the riverbank vegetation. Crocodiles bask on the sandbanks in the morning sun during winter months. Numerous bird species work the shallow water including various kingfisher species, river lapwings, and occasionally the endangered Sarus crane. Visits require arrangement through the Betla Forest Office — jeep hire, guide fees, and reserve entry permit are all necessary. Most visitors to Betla National Park who stay overnight are able to include Kechki Sangam on their itinerary as an early morning wildlife drive. The experience of sitting in silence at the sangam while wildlife approaches the water is among the most memorable available anywhere in Jharkhand.
