About Khalari Forest Waterfalls, Giridih

The forest streams in the Khalari range of Giridih district produce seasonal waterfalls on the plateau edges from October through February, when post-monsoon stream levels remain high enough to sustain flow over the granite and quartzite faces that characterise this section of the northern Chotanagpur plateau. The area provides accessible forest waterfall trekking within the broader Giridih district nature circuit.

The Khalari range in the southern part of Giridih district encompasses a section of plateau where numerous small streams drain from the interior forest toward the lower country to the south, creating a series of waterfalls at the plateau edges in the post-monsoon and early cool season. The falls vary from modest cascades of 5–10 metres to occasional plunges of 20 metres or more where the granite drops sharply. The forest through which the approach trails pass is dense sal with bamboo in the stream valleys — typical of the well-preserved sections of the Giridih Forest Division's southern range. The trail network is informal, consisting of the paths used by forest staff and village communities, but the terrain is accessible on foot with reasonable fitness and appropriate footwear. The waterfalls are at their best in October and November when stream levels are high from late monsoon rain but the weather has turned dry enough for comfortable walking. By January the flows at smaller falls reduce to trickles; the larger falls retain some flow through February. March brings the palash (flame of the forest) into bloom along the stream courses, substituting a different kind of spectacle for the diminishing water. For visitors combining Khalari with Khandoli Dam and Giridih town in a two-day Giridih circuit, the forest waterfall experience provides the active outdoor component that complements the reservoir picnic and town heritage.
