Koderma's mica geology is visible before you reach the mine sites — the road cuts through terrain where exposed rock faces glitter with flakes of muscovite mica, and the soil along the roadside has a distinctive silvery sheen from mica particles worked into the ground over decades of mining activity. The mica here is book mica — large, flat, transparent sheets that can be cleaved into wafers thinner than paper — and it was this quality that made Koderma mica essential for the electronics industry. The mining heritage landscape around Koderma includes hundreds of open-cast and shaft mine sites, some of the larger ones forming significant craters in the plateau landscape. The abandoned processing sheds where mica was split, graded, and packed by hand workers are structurally decayed but recognisable, and the sorting debris — broken mica fragments and gangue — creates distinctive glittering ground cover across the former processing areas. The mica industry's decline from the 1980s onwards — driven by synthetic mica alternatives and shifting electronics industry supply chains — left Koderma with an ambiguous legacy: the geological wealth had been extracted, the workers moved on or into poverty, and the landscape remained permanently altered. Child labour in the informal mica sector became an international concern in the 2000s, adding a dimension of social history to the geological narrative. For visitors interested in industrial geology, mining heritage, or economic history, Koderma's mica landscape is genuinely unusual — a globally significant mineral deposit whose heyday is visible in the physical record of thousands of excavation sites and the literal glitter of mica in the soil.
