McCluskeyGanj Jharkhand — India's Only Anglo-Indian Village, Colonial Heritage & Forest Homestays
India's Only Anglo-Indian Village — Jharkhand's Colonial Hidden Gem
McCluskeyGanj is a heritage village in Ramgarh district, Jharkhand, located 64 km northwest of Ranchi at an elevation of 450 metres. It is the only planned Anglo-Indian settlement in India, established in 1933 by Ernest Timothy McCluskie — an Anglo-Indian businessman from Kolkata — as a community for the Anglo-Indian population. The village is listed on the Incredible India rural tourism portal of the Government of India as a heritage rural tourism destination.
McCluskeyGanj was conceived as a self-sufficient colony where the Anglo-Indian community could build a settled homeland in independent India. At its peak in the 1940s and 1950s, it housed hundreds of Anglo-Indian families in sprawling colonial bungalows, complete with churches, a school, and a distinctive British aesthetic in the midst of Jharkhand's forests. Today, the village is a hauntingly beautiful living museum of colonial architecture — crumbling verandas, ivy-covered walls, red-tiled roofs — with a small but growing heritage tourism ecosystem of bungalow homestays. St. John's Church at the village centre remains a landmark. The Chatti River, 5 to 7 km from the village, is a scenic riverbank locally nicknamed 'Jharkhand's Marine Drive' where the river flows over smooth rocks with a wide sandy shore. Don Bosco Academy, established in 1997, has revitalized the village with student life and restored several colonial bungalows.
