About Palamu Fort Ruins, Medininagar

Palamu Fort, near Betla in Latehar district, comprises two medieval fortifications — Old Palamu Fort and New Palamu Fort — built by the Chero dynasty rulers of the Palamu kingdom between the 16th and 17th centuries. The forts overlook the North Koel River from a strategic promontory and represent the most substantial medieval military architecture surviving in Jharkhand.

The Palamu kingdom was ruled by the Chero dynasty from the medieval period until the late Mughal era, and the two Palamu forts — separated by about 800 metres and representing successive phases of construction — are the most tangible physical legacy of this now-forgotten polity. Old Palamu Fort dates from around the 16th century; New Palamu Fort, the better-preserved of the two, was constructed in the mid-17th century and shows the characteristic fortification style of the Mughal provincial era: sandstone walls with bastions, gateways with ornate arched entrances, and the strategic positioning above river and forest. The New Fort in particular retains substantial standing walls, gateway structures, and several interior buildings including a mosque and residential quarters. The Mughal-influenced ornamentation on the gateway arches — carved floral patterns in sandstone — is unusually fine for a provincial fort of this period and reflects the cultural reach of Mughal aesthetics into the forest polities of the Chotanagpur edge. The fort setting is dramatic: both structures sit on elevated ground above the North Koel River, which was the strategic reason for their siting — controlling the river crossing and the forested valley approaches from the south. The Betla National Park forest surrounds the fort on three sides, and views from the fort walls extend over the same forest landscape that covered the Palamu valley in the Chero period. The forts are listed monuments under the Archaeological Survey of India. Entry is free and there are minimal facilities — but the combination of medieval military architecture, Mughal aesthetics, and forest river setting makes Palamu Fort one of Jharkhand's most rewarding heritage sites.
