Panchet Dam Dhanbad — DVC Reservoir on Damodar River 210 km from Ranchi
Damodar Valley's Last Great Dam — A Vast Reservoir at the Bengal–Jharkhand Edge
Panchet Dam is a Damodar Valley Corporation dam on the Damodar River at the Jharkhand–West Bengal border, approximately 210 km from Ranchi in Dhanbad district. It is the last in the chain of DVC dams on the Damodar and creates a wide reservoir on the boundary between the two states. The dam and its surrounding forested hills are popular with visitors from both Dhanbad and the Asansol–Durgapur industrial belt of West Bengal.
Panchet Dam sits at the point where the Damodar River crosses from Jharkhand into West Bengal — a boundary position that gives it a cross-border character unusual among Jharkhand's tourism sites. The DVC dam was completed in 1959 and its reservoir extends both upstream and laterally into low forested valleys, creating a body of water that is wider than Maithon in some sections but less intensively developed for tourism. The dam's appeal lies largely in its setting — forested hills on both banks, the clear demarcation of the dam wall against the sky, and the broad stretch of water. Boating is available at a basic level, though less organised than at Maithon. The dam wall is accessible to visitors and offers panoramic views across the reservoir to the wooded hills of West Bengal's Burdwan district on the far bank. Panchet is almost invariably visited as a partner destination to Maithon Dam (15 km upstream) on the same day. The two dams form a natural pair — Maithon being the better-developed tourist site and Panchet the more atmospheric and less crowded one. Together they represent the Damodar Valley Corporation's engineering legacy in the region, which also includes power generation stations that can be viewed from the dam walls.

Both are DVC dams near Dhanbad, 15 km apart on the Damodar River. Maithon (65 sq km reservoir) is better-developed for tourism with the Deer Park Island, organised boating, and a DVC guest house. Panchet is larger in dam size, less crowded, and sits on the Jharkhand–West Bengal state border. Most visitors do both on the same day.
Panchet Dam is approximately 210 km from Ranchi via Hazaribagh and Dhanbad. Drive time is about 5 hours. From Dhanbad city it is 48 km. Panchet railway station on the Dhanbad–Asansol line is 2 km from the dam.
October to March is best. Post-monsoon months offer clear water and pleasant dam wall walks. December–February are the driest and clearest months.
