Topchanchi Lake sits in a shallow depression in the sal forest plateau, fed by seasonal streams and maintained by the low-lying geography rather than any dam structure. The lake is naturally bounded and relatively circular in shape, with mature sal forest coming to the water's edge on three sides and a maintained park and guest house on the fourth. The surrounding forest constitutes the Topchanchi Wildlife Sanctuary — a small but intact forest block that provides refuge for small mammals, reptiles, and a productive bird list. The lake's position directly on NH-19 (the old Grand Trunk Road) has historically made it a stopping point for travellers and a picnic destination for Dhanbad's urban population. The state tourism guest house was one of the early forest rest houses established in the region and, while modest, is functional and allows overnight stays at the lake edge. Boating on the lake is available through the tourism department. Topchanchi is best experienced in the early morning, when the sal forest is alive with birds and the lake surface is undisturbed by the day's visitors. November through February brings migratory waterfowl to the lake surface. The Topchanchi Wildlife Sanctuary forest walk — a short informal trail into the sal forest behind the guest house — offers the best chance of seeing Indian porcupines, jackals, and the commonly resident bird species of the Chotanagpur forests.
