Tamasin Waterfall Chatra — Multi-Tier Cascade in Sal Forest 160 km from Ranchi
Chatra's Cascading Secret — A Multi-Tier Waterfall Deep in Sal Forest
Tamasin Waterfall is a multi-tier cascade in Chatra district, Jharkhand, located approximately 160 km from Ranchi in dense sal forest. The falls descend in two to three distinct tiers over a sandstone and granite mixed face, with a wide pool forming at the base that is swimmable in the post-monsoon months. Tamasin is among the lesser-known waterfalls of Jharkhand, which gives it a significantly lower visitor density than the state's more famous falls.
Tamasin Waterfall sits in a section of Chatra district where the terrain drops sharply from the Chotanagpur plateau into the Koel River drainage basin. The falls form on a seasonal stream that runs strongly from August through January, cascading first over a broad upper ledge and then dropping again at the base into a wide circular pool. The second tier is the most dramatic — the water free-falls about 12 metres before spreading across the pool's rock floor. The surrounding sal forest is intact and dense, providing both shade for the approach trail and habitat for a range of birds including various hornbills, minivets, and flycatchers commonly encountered along the path from the nearest road. The trail to the falls is about 1.5 km through forest and takes approximately 20–25 minutes at a moderate pace. No formal facilities exist at the site — no food stalls, no ticketing — which is both a limitation and a reason for its undisturbed quality. Tamasin is best visited between October and January when the forest is at its greenest after monsoon and the falls are running at near-peak volume. The journey from Ranchi is long (160 km, roughly 4 hours), which is why most visitors come from Chatra town (30 km) or combine the falls with Bhadrakali Temple Itkhori (20 km further) on a dedicated day trip from Hazaribagh.
