Benisagar West Singhbhum — Ancient Archaeological Site Near Chaibasa, Jharkhand
Jharkhand's Mysterious Archaeological Site — Ancient Temple Ruins in the Tribal Belt
Benisagar is an archaeological site in West Singhbhum district, approximately 150 km from Ranchi, where a large natural water tank (sagar) and surrounding area contain the remains of ancient temple structures dating to the early medieval period. The site has been studied by the Archaeological Survey of India and is significant as evidence of a pre-tribal Hindu settlement in the Chotanagpur region that predates the tribal dominance of the area. Stone sculptures, carved pillars, and structural remains have been documented at the site.
Benisagar's water tank is the central feature — a large natural or artificially improved reservoir that local tradition associates with Beni (a name suggesting a river confluence or sacred water body). Around its banks, partially submerged stone sculptures and carved architectural fragments are visible — remnants of temples that once stood at this site, believed to date from the 9th to 12th centuries AD based on the sculptural style of the recovered pieces. The site is significant because West Singhbhum is now predominantly a tribal district (Ho and Santali communities are the largest groups), and evidence of formal medieval Hindu temple construction here complicates and enriches the standard narrative of the region's settlement history. Archaeological Survey of India surveys have recovered Vishnu sculptures, Shiva imagery, and geometric decorative elements characteristic of the eastern Nagara architectural tradition of that period. Benisagar is rarely on tourist itineraries but is of considerable interest to archaeologists, historians of tribal Jharkhand, and those interested in the layered cultural history of the Chotanagpur Plateau. The site can be combined with a visit to Chaibasa town and the West Singhbhum district's natural attractions for a complete heritage-and-nature day from Ranchi.
