About Hirni Falls

Hirni Falls is a 37-metre waterfall on the Ramgarha River in West Singhbhum district, 70 km from Ranchi and 30 km from Chakradharpur. Uniquely among Jharkhand's major waterfalls, Hirni is visible at ground level from the road without requiring a descent — the viewing point is at the same elevation as the falls face, allowing a direct, close-range experience. The surrounding sal forest is home to peacocks, deer, monkeys, and elephants that occasionally visit the waterfall area.

Hirni Falls drops 37 metres over a curved basalt face in one of the few locations in Jharkhand where the surrounding terrain allows a ground-level viewing angle from the front of the falls rather than from above or below. This means visitors can stand within 20–30 metres of the full height of the falls, watching the water cascade past at eye level without having to climb or descend. The volume in October and November is significant enough to create constant spray over the viewing area. The forest around Hirni Falls is dense sapwood and sal — dense enough to maintain a constant population of peacocks whose calls echo through the valley at dawn. Spotted deer visit the area in the mornings, and elephant footprints are regularly visible in the soft earth near the waterfall pool. In the dry season (January–March), the waterfall reduces but the wildlife activity around the diminishing water source actually increases. Hirni Falls is reached from the Ranchi–Chakradharpur road — the route is primarily through the agricultural flatlands south of Ranchi before entering the forested approaches of West Singhbhum. The falls are about 70 km from Ranchi and 30 km from Chakradharpur, making them convenient for travellers from either direction. A small tourism development around the falls includes basic food stalls and a Forest Department inspection bungalow available for overnight stays.
