About Kiriburu

Kiriburu is a SAIL (Steel Authority of India Limited) township perched at an elevation of approximately 950 metres in the Saranda Forest hills of West Singhbhum district, 200 km from Ranchi. The township was established to house workers of the Kiriburu iron ore mines, but its hilltop elevation, clean air, and spectacular 360-degree sunset views over the Saranda Forest have made it one of Jharkhand's most sought-after nature destinations. On clear evenings, the sun sets over a continuous horizon of sal forest stretching to the Odisha border.

Kiriburu sits on a ridge in the Saranda Forest at a height that places it above most of the surrounding forest canopy, creating a horizon uninterrupted by any urban development for as far as the eye can see. The SAIL township itself is a neat, planned settlement of company housing surrounded by ornamental gardens, and the contrast between the orderly township and the wild Saranda forest beyond its boundaries is striking. The sunset from the main viewpoint above the township is extraordinary — the light turns the forest canopy through shades of amber and gold as the sun descends over what appears to be an endless sea of trees. Kiriburu's natural appeal is compounded by its accessibility from Chaibasa (the West Singhbhum district headquarters) and its proximity to the Saranda Forest's wildlife zones. Elephants are frequently seen at the forest edge around the township, particularly in the early morning and after dark. The forest around Kiriburu has been documented to host leopards, giant squirrels, and significant bird populations. The artificial lake maintained within the township provides a pleasant midday picnic option. Kiriburu is typically paired with Meghahatuburu — its twin peak township 8 km away — for a combined hill station experience in the Saranda hills. Both can be comfortably explored in a single day if arriving from Chaibasa. Accommodation in SAIL guesthouses is available for both townships, making an overnight stay practical.
