Mandal Dam Latehar — Scenic Forest Reservoir on the Netarhat Road, Jharkhand
A Scenic Forest Reservoir on the Road to Netarhat — En Route Pause of Beauty
Mandal Dam is a small reservoir located approximately 130 km from Ranchi on the route to Netarhat, in the Latehar district of Jharkhand. Built on a forest stream in the Chotanagpur Plateau's upper reaches, the dam creates a photogenic reservoir backed by forested hills. Its location directly on the Lohardaga–Netarhat road makes it a natural rest stop on one of Jharkhand's most scenic drives, and many Netarhat-bound travellers pause here for photographs and a brief forest walk.
Mandal Dam sits in a valley pocket where the road to Netarhat begins its serious climb into the plateau's upper elevations. The surrounding forest at this point is dense sal, transitioning to pine and eucalyptus at the higher elevations visible behind the dam. The reservoir's still water reflects the surrounding treeline in a way that makes even a brief stop worthwhile for photographers. The dam is used for local irrigation and forms the water supply for nearby villages. It is not a developed tourist facility — there are no boat hire services or structured activities — but the surrounding forest and the reservoir combine to create an atmosphere of peaceful natural beauty. In winter mornings (November to January), mist often lies over the reservoir until mid-morning, creating a particularly atmospheric visual. Mandal Dam is most valuable as a rest and photography stop on the Ranchi–Netarhat drive, which at 156 km is a 4–5 hour journey. Breaking the journey here (approximately 2.5 hours from Ranchi) with a 30-minute walk along the embankment is a sensible strategy for long-distance travellers. The village near the dam can provide basic refreshments.
