Tourist Places in Sahibganj Jharkhand — Udhwa Lake Bird Sanctuary, Rajmahal Hills & Ganga Ghat
Sahibganj district sits at the northeastern corner of Jharkhand where the Rajmahal Hills descend to the Ganga River — a landscape of geological, ecological, and historical significance that is among the most distinctive in the state despite lying at the edge of Jharkhand's tourist circuit.
Udhwa Lake Bird Sanctuary, at the Ganga's edge 20 km from Sahibganj town, is Jharkhand's premier migratory waterbird site. Each winter (November–February), over 50,000 birds arrive from Central Asia, Siberia, and Tibet to winter on the lake and adjacent wetlands — bar-headed geese in their hundreds, brahminy ducks, Eurasian spoonbill, painted stork, greater flamingo (occasional), and dozens of duck and wader species. The sanctuary is one of very few high-volume migratory bird concentrations in Jharkhand and one of the significant stopover points on the Central Asian Flyway through eastern India.
The Rajmahal Hills, along the district's western edge, are among the oldest geological formations in India — a trap rock formation with fossilised plants, insects, and vertebrates from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods (the 'Rajmahal Fossils' have been studied by palaeontologists since the 19th century). The geological significance of the hills is matched by their visual character — abrupt steep slopes rising from the Ganga plain to plateau surfaces of basalt and sandstone. Barharwa Ganga Ghat, at the confluence of the Ganga and a local stream, is the main riverside destination for pilgrimage and river viewing in Sahibganj district.
