Udhwa Lake is a shallow Gangetic floodplain lake formed by the Ganges river system in Sahibganj district, at the northernmost edge of Jharkhand where the state border touches the Ganga. During winter (November–February), the lake and its associated marsh become a staging and overwintering ground for migratory waterbirds from Central Asia, Tibet, and the Himalayan foothills. The sanctuary's declared area of 5.2 sq km encompasses both the open water and the reed-marsh periphery where species like purple swamp hen, bitterns, and jacanas breed year-round. The winter bird count at Udhwa regularly exceeds 50,000 individual birds across 70+ species. The most numerically dominant species in peak winter are bar-headed geese and brahminy ducks (ruddy shelduck), which form visible flocks on the open water. Less common but more sought-after sightings include Eurasian spoonbill, painted stork, and occasional sightings of the greater spotted eagle. The early morning hours (6–9 AM) during December and January represent the best birdwatching window. Access to the sanctuary is via Rajmahal in Sahibganj district, 15 km from the lake. The sanctuary is best combined with a visit to Rajmahal Hills (15 km, known for its fossil-bearing rock formations) on the same day. Accommodation in Sahibganj town (40 km) or Rajmahal (15 km) is the most practical arrangement.
