Sahebganj Ganga Eco-Tourism — Dolphin Sightings & River Islands, Jharkhand
Riverine Tourism on the Ganges — Boat Rides, Gangetic Dolphin Sightings and Island Sand Camps
Sahebganj district in northern Jharkhand has a 40-kilometre stretch of Ganga riverfront — the only section of the sacred river that flows through Jharkhand — and the Jharkhand Tourism Development Corporation has developed an eco-tourism programme on this stretch offering boat rides, Gangetic dolphin sightings, river island camping, and access to the Rajmahal hills fossil heritage.
The Ganga at Sahebganj flows through a section of the river where the main channel is wide and the northern bank (Bihar side) is low, giving the southern bank at Sahebganj an unusually open river experience — the kind of broad-horizon Ganga landscape associated with Varanasi and Patna but with far less development and far fewer visitors. The JTDC eco-tourism programme on the Sahebganj Ganga stretch includes motor-assisted boat rides along the river channel to the dolphin observation zones. Gangetic river dolphins — one of the world's few freshwater dolphin species, listed as endangered — are resident in this section of the Ganga in significant numbers. Sightings from boats are reliable during the November–March low-water season when dolphins concentrate in the deeper channel sections. The sand islands (chars) that form in the Ganga channel during the dry season become accessible by boat in December–February. Some of these are large enough for day visits, offering an unusual experience of walking on a temporary island in the middle of the sacred river. The JTDC has experimented with overnight sand island camping — one of the most distinctive accommodation experiences in Jharkhand. The combination of dolphin sightings, river island access, and the geological heritage of the Rajmahal hills visible from the river makes the Sahebganj Ganga stretch one of the most multidimensional tourism experiences in eastern Jharkhand.
